Rhea Chakraborty named as accused in CBI FIR over Sushant Singh Rajput's death

Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday registered an FIR amid the ongoing controversy over Sushant Singh Rajput's death. This comes a day after Central notification handed over the case to the agency on the recommendation of the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government.

As per reports, the FIR filed by the agency is based on the one registered by Bihar police in Patna. The CBI's FIR names Sushant's rumoured girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, her parents, her brother Showik and two others for "suspected offences of criminal conspiracy, abetment of suicide, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, theft, criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal intimidation."

"The investigation of FIR No. 241/2020 dated 25.07.2020 registered u/s 341, 342, 380, 406, 420, 306, 506, 120B IPC, PS- Rajiv Nagar, District-Patna, related to death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput has been transferred to Central Bureau of Investigation for investigation," the CBI FIR says"

The CBI is also in touch with the Bihar Police, which had filed the FIR against Rhea Chakraborty and her family on Sushant's father's complaint. According to officials, the CBI's Special Investigation Team (SIT) will probe actor Sushant Singh Rajput case.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government has expressed strong opposition to the handing over of the case to the CBI. It has even claimed that the handing over of the case to the CBI was being done for" political reasons" including the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar. Additionally, the Maharashtra Government has raised issues of jurisdiction to claim Bihar government or police had no locus standi in the case since Sushant's death took place in his Mumbai residence.

The case was handed over to the CBI after Sushant's father alleged that there was a "cover-up" to save some "influential" people in B-town.

There are numerous theories as to what led to Sushant's demise. While some claim that he was a victim of 'nepotism culture' in Bollywood, another points to the alleged role of his former girlfriend and live-in partner Rhea Chakraborty, who has been accused by Sushant's family of abetting his suicide by harassing him and diverting his money among other offences. At the same time, a Supreme Court bench has also admitted that the truth in regards to the star's untimely death needs to come out.

The allegations against Rhea will be the focus of the CBI investigation as the central agency has taken up the case registered by her father. Notably, the Enforcement Directorate has also summoned her on Friday for questioning for alleged financial misconduct.
