NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Thailand Open, Ace Indian badminton stars Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy have tested positive for COVID-19. Further, both the shuttlers have been withdrawn from the Thailand Open which gets underway in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, Nehwal's husband Parupalli Kashyap has also been quarantined and taken to hospital for further tests since he was in close proximity to his wife.

Reportedly, in a 3rd and last mandatory round of Covid-19 tests ahead of the tournament, Saina and Prannoy were tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier, Saina had complained about physios and trainers not being allowed to meet the players during the entire tour. She also had raised objections on the one hour practice time for the entire team.

The Indian team and all other athletes and staff who are part of the tournament were tested on their arrival in Bangkok, and all 824 participants, including 216 players from 22 teams have tested negative.

"Apart from Nehwal and Prannoy, Parupalli Kashyap is also being taken to the hospital for further testing because he was obviously in close proximity to his wife Saina," the hospital source told media.

This tournament was supposed to be Saina Nehwal's first major international commitment in a COVID-19 marred season. This is the second time the Indian shuttler has tested positive in the last few weeks along with Kashyap.

Earlier this month, former Indian cricket captain, Saurav Ganguly suffered a mild cardiac arrest during a workout session at his Behala residence on January 2. He had been moved to the Woodlands Hospital that day itself where he underwent angioplasty. The 48-year-old had three blocked coronary arteries and a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage.

After five days, Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly was discharged from Woodlands hospital, Kolkata on January 7.
