LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party Kanpur Vice-President Narendra Singh alias Pintu allegedly attempted suicide by lighting himself ablaze outside the Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow after his party lost the Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, Narendra Singh initiated the action because he believed the party lost the state Legislative Assembly election to the BJP due to irregularities in electronic voting machines (EVM).

A businessman, Narendra Singh suffered 30 per cent burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at a civil hospital. The doctors have stated that his condition is critical.

Shyam Babu Shukla, station house officer, Hazratganj police station, said they had yet to record Singh's statement to learn the real cause for his actions.

As per police, Singh travelled from Kanpur to Lucknow on Thursday.

Police officials said that Singh arrived outside the Vidhan Bhawan carrying fuel in a bucket after learning that the BJP had won the election for the second time in a row. He poured it on himself and lit himself on fire.

When the police squad saw the flames, they hurried in and extinguished the flames before rushing him to the hospital for treatment, police added.
