Senior Professor of University of Hyderabad Arrested on Charges of Sexual Harassment

HYDERABAD: In another incident of sexual harassment, a senior professor of a university in Hyderabad was arrested based on the complaints of a foreign student.

According to reports, the student who is a Thai national, the alleged professor invited the student to his place late on the evening of Friday on the pretext of sharing a book. He was reportedly alone at his home near the university at that time. According to the complaint, he urged her to take alcohol and then tried to take advantage of the situation. Thereafter she approached the police with the help of another professor and the police noted her complaint

A press release issued by the University of Hyderabad on Saturday mentioned that the institution condemns the actions of the person. It also mentioned that the professor in question has been put under suspension with immediate effect. One of the major problems related to the incident is that the victim speaks only her native language.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, K Shilpavalli mentioned that the police team is now taking proper action regarding the matter. The DCP also added that they have already arrested the accused professor under sections 354 and 354A of the IPC and legal procedures have been initiated. The officer also clarified that it was not a sexual assault as mentioned by the students' union of the university.

Meanwhile, the students of the university gathered at the gate of the premises to stage a protest. It was based on a call for protests asking all students and staff of the institution ti gather at the main gate on the morning of Saturday. They demanded the safety of all female students on campus after the incident. They alleged that the administration of the university and especially the registrar ignored all the calls from the students and night while the students gathered in support of the victim and called it a deliberate delay and passing around of responsibilities from one person to another.
