NEW DELHI: Several political leaders of the nation will be taking part in the three day celebration of the 400th Birthday of Lachit Borphukan in the nerve center of the country.

Lachit Borphukan was a revered general in the Ahom forces. The forces under his command were instrumental in defeating the Mughal army in the Battle of Saraighat in the year 1671. That defeat to the forces under Ramsingh has been on the records as one the major blows to the mighty mughal empire. The war on the banks of the Brahmapurtra and strategies of the Ahom general are relatively unknown to a huge number of Indians.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the 400th birthday of the great Ahom general with events distributed across the year. His 400th birthday is on November 24, 2022. To mark the occasion, the state government has curated an elaborate list of events. A week-long celebration across the state flagged off on Friday.

However the main event of the ceremony will be organized in the Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will cut the ribbon of an exhibition in New Delhi to commemorate the event. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju will flag off a cultural celebration in Sunder Park of New Delhi on the same day. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be present as chief guest on the next day, which is also the 400th birthday of the Ahom general. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in the valedictory event on November 25.

The campaign to spread awareness will also include the release of a biography of the general as well as the screening of a documentary based on his life and work during the celebration in New Delhi. The Assam CM also appealed for a chapter dedicated to Lachit Borphukan in the NCERT syllabus to make children of the country more aware.
