Sheena Bora murder case: Mumbai supercop Rakesh Maria reveals startling details

NEW DELHI: Former Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria has revealed some startling details about his career life in his book- 'Let Me Say It Now' in which he mentions some interesting details about 26/11 Mumbai blasts to the much publicised Sheena Bora murder case.

He talks about close relationship shared between Deven Bharti, former joint commissioner of police (law and order) and the Mukerjeas and that Peter Mukerjea had informed Deven that Sheena had gone missing.

Maria also talks about his sudden transfer before he could contribute anything substantial to this investigation. Additional chief secretary (Home) KP Bakshi had informed Maria of his transfer through a text message.

Maria was replaced by Mumbai Police commissioner -- Ahmed Javed . Javed was also quite close to the Mukerjeas as the latter were once invited to an Eid party thrown by Javed.

Maria also denied allegations of shielding Peter or giving wrong information to then Maharashtra CM Fadnavis . Maris says that he never said that Peter was innocent but did say that Peter was not in the country when the crime took place and that his role needed to be probed.

For a fact, in February 2020 the Bombay High Court granted bail to former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, an accused arrested in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, on grounds that there was no prima facie evidence of his involvement in the crime.

Following a request by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the High Court stayed the implementation of its order for six weeks to enable the CBI to file an appeal in the matter.

Earlier, Justice Nitin W. Sambre granted bail on a surety of Rs 200,000 to Mukerjea who was arrested over four years ago and was in jail since barring release briefly on medical grounds.

In his order, Justice Sambre said there was no prima facie evidence to infer that Peter Mukerjea was involved in committing the crime since he was not in India at that point.

The judge also observed that the trial in the case is already on, the applicant has spent more than four years in jail and recently underwent bypass surgery.

In the conditional bail, the court ordered Peter Mukerjea not to contact his daughter Vidhi, son Rahul or any other witnesses in the case, nor travel abroad without its permission. Mukerjea, 64, was arrested on November 19, 2015, from his residence in Mumbai.

His arrest came hours after the CBI had filed its charge sheet against his (then) wife, Indrani Mukerjea alias Bora, her first husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyamvar P. Rai.
