Singing National Anthem must in Maharashtra colleges, says Education minister Uday Samant

MUMBAI: From February 19, singing National Anthem will become compulsory in colleges of Maharashtra.

"Maharashtra government to make singing National Anthem in colleges compulsory from February 19," Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant told the media on Wednesday.

According to media reports, in January, Uday Samant had directed colleges and universities in Maharashtra to play the National Anthem at the beginning of their public programs.

Also, Uday Samant said that colleges and universities should adopt singing the National Anthem just like it is played at the start of any movie in theaters.

Uday Samant said that playing and singing the National Anthem will charge a sense of national pride and honor in the young students and at the same time it will also teach them the importance of India's Independence, the reports added.

On 30th November 2016, the Supreme court had ordered, that national anthem must be played in every cinema before a film is screened and those present must "stand up in respect" till the anthem ends.

It said the practice would "instill a feeling within one a sense of committed patriotism and nationalism”

It also stated that Cinema halls should even display the national flag on the screen when the anthem is played.

A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy said it is high time for people to express their "love for the motherland."

Justice Misra remarked, "People must feel this is my country. This is my motherland... Arrey, who are you? You are an Indian first. In other countries, you respect their restrictions. In India, you do not want any restrictions?"

The Bench elaborated about the order by saying, it is the foremost duty of every person to show respect when the national anthem is played, recited or sung under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1951.
