SpiceJet technician dies at Kolkata airport as flight landing gear door shuts accidentally

Kolkata: A technician of SpiceJet flights lost his life while being on duty at the Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. The incident took place at around 1 am when the technician was carrying out maintenance work in the aircraft.

In rather worrying news for the technicians working on the flights, an unexpected incident of losing life has happened in the Kolkata international airport. As per reports, the technician was working on a SpiceJet flight which was being parked in the airport. The technician is said to be trapped in the main landing gear door as the door shut accidentally.

A senior official of the Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport cited, "The technician was carrying out maintenance on the landing gear of the Bombardier Q400 plane when the landing door accidentally got closed and he got stuck there."

It was only with the help of the fire brigade that the body of the technician could be removed from the landing gear.

A police team visited the spot of the accident while forensic experts are to collect evidence. An officer added, "Our officers have reached the spot. We are talking to other staffers of the airline who were present there. We are trying to understand whether it was a technical glitch or the result of someone's callousness."

Before this, it was just on Tuesday when the Indian aviation regulator DGCA had issued safety directions to airlines to keep a check on the multiple incidents of planes overshooting runways. Notably, a SpiceJet aircraft had gone off the track on the runway while it was landing at Kolkata airport. This incident had damaged four lights.

Another SpiceJet flight which was flying from Jaipur, landed at the Mumbai airport overshooting the main runway as there were heavy rains.

The circular had thus, stated, "Crew should be well aware of the aircraft limitations and of take-off/landing performance calculations during the adverse weather operations."
