KOLKATA: In yet another political development veteran Trinamool Congress TMC MP Sisir Adhikari, the father of Suvendu Adhikari who has been pitted by the Bhartiya Janata Party BJP against TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee have joined the BJP in Union home minister Amit Shah's rally at Egra in Purba Medinipur.

There has been a continuous shift of heavyweight party leaders from the TMC joining the saffron party ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections slated on March 27. The 79-year-old Adhikari's step came as another jolt to the TMC.

It needs to be mentioned here that speculations were high of the recent shift of party by Adhikari. Earlier, on March 13, BJP MP from Hooghly and the party's assembly poll candidate from Chunchura Locket Chatterjee had visited the Adhikari residence and had lunch with him. Speculations grew wilder when BJP leader Mansukh Mandviya on Saturday met Adhikari senior and invited him to Amit Shah's rally in Purba Medinipur on Sunday. However, clearing the air of speculation Adhikari today joined the BJP. The septuagenarian followed the footsteps of his two sons Suvendu and Soumendu, who had earlier joined the BJP.

The Adhikari family has a huge influence in Bengal's Purba Medinipur district. Adhikari while accusing the TMC asserted that the ruling party has left no other option for him as he had been humiliated in several instances.

Adhikari had earlier been removed as chairman of the prestigious Digha-Shankarpur Development Council and president of the Trinamool's district unit.

As per reports, Suvendu 's brother Soumendu Adhikari too joined the BJP after Trinamool removed him as the administrator of Contai Municipality. Speculations are at the rift that Sisir Adhikari's other son Dibyendu Adhikari who is a Trinamool MP from Tamluk, may also follow suit.

Banerjee who has filed her nominations from the Nandigram constituency will be contesting against her protege-turned political foe Suvendu in the ensuing elections. While she is confident of winning the seat, senior Adhikari claimed that his son will win the polls by a huge mandate and wipe out the TMC.
