Telangana woman rides 1400KM round-trip on her scooty to reach son stranded in Andhra

HYDERABAD: Razia Begum, a 48-year-old headmistress of a government school from Telangana, made a 1400-km round-trip on her scooty to bring back her son stranded in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.

Her son Nizamuddin had gone from Telangana to Rahamatabad in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh on 12 March to drop his friend and stayed back there. He was stranded there due to sudden announcement of lockdown. It was his mother who finally reached him from Telangana and brought him home.

“It was a difficult journey on a small two-wheeler for a woman. But the determination to bring my son back overtook all my fears. I packed rotis and they kept me going. It was fearsome in the nights with no traffic movement and people on roads," she told media.

Begum would fuel her scooty at petrol joints and eat roti and sabizis that she had packed for the journey. She decided to not send her elder son who is an engineering graduate as police might not believe him or the purpose of his ride. Begum too had difficulty convincing the cops to let her into the border state, but she finally succeeded in her mission.

Meanwhile, as COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the country, at least 88 percent Indians feel that the 21-day nationwide lockdown, scheduled to end on April 14, should be extended further, a poll said on Thursday.

The findings showed that 88 per cent of the respondents are refraining to order food online during the lockdown period, according to the survey by news platform Inshorts. The poll which included response from 40,000 app users revealed that 92 per cent of the respondents feel private sector should be allowed testing of COVID-19 in order to augment testing facilities for the respiratory

disease.

“Lockdown is the best way to practice social distancing and curb the spread of the coronavirus,” said the survey.
