TMC Appoints Babul Supriyo As National Spokesperson

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Babul Supriyo has been appointed as the national spokesperson of the party.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, the former union minister, Supriyo thanked the party supremo for giving him the new responsibility.

"My sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Didi @MamataOfficial & @abhishekaitc for appointing/including me in the illustrious Team of National Spokespersons of @AITCofficial. Shall do my very best to live up to the responsibility entrusted upon me," he tweeted.

As per a senior TMC leader, Supriyo's appointment as a national spokesperson was a part of the strategy devised by the party to expand its base outside Bengal.

Last year, Supriyo, who was with BJP, dropped from the union ministry following which he joined the TMC.

He also gave up his Asansol Lok Sabha seat, which he had won on BJP tickets twice.

Later, the TMC fielded him for the Ballygunge assembly by-poll in April this year, and he successfully managed to grab the seat by a comfortable margin.
