GUWAHATI: Former All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev who recently joined Trinamool Congress has been nominated for Rajya Sabha seat in West Bengal.
Sushmita after joining TMC has been assigned to looking after the party's organizational works in Assam and Tripura.
Sushmita was also a former MP in Lok Sabha from Silchar of Assam.
Announcing it the All India Trinamool Congress on their Twitter said, "We are extremely pleased to nominate @SushmitaDevAITC to the Upper House of the Parliament. @MamataOfficial 's vision to empower women and ensure their maximum participation in politics shall help our society to achieve much more!".
Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sushmita Dev wrote on her Twitter, "I am overwhelmed. I Thank my leader @MamataOfficial from the bottom of my heart. Her conviction to see more women in parliament is exemplary. To give someone from North East is path breaking. I will do my very best. Folded hands".
Earlier, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to hold six bye-elections in six states. These by-polls would be held in Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant due to various reasons. According to press not of ECI, poll would be held in two seats in Tamil Nadu and one each in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Madhya Pradesh. The polls to all these seven seats will take place on October 4, the EC said.
The press release by the Election Commission revealed that the issue of notification will be on September 15, 2021, while the last date till candidates can file their nominations is September 22.
