Triple Talaq bill passed in Rajya Sabha, Will go for President of India's approval

New Delhi: The Triple Talaq bill is passed finally and with this, the passing of the bill can be cited as a major political win for the Narendra Modi government. Although this took a long debate for the bill to be passed finally, but the final fruit is worth the wait and debates at last. The bill secured 99 votes to 84 votes.

The final step left for the bill to be finally named a law is the last nod by the President of the country. Once the president gives his nod for the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill and notified by the government, the historic replacement of the triple talaq ordinance of promulgated last in February will take place.

This was already been declared by the Supreme Court of India that the practice of triple talaq is unconstitutional and such practices of giving divorce to wife simply by uttering the word ‘talaq’ three times are void and illegal.

The effort to pass the bill was put in the previous term of the Modi government as well but it lapsed with the dissolution of the Lok Sabha upon completion of its tenure. The bill also did not get approved by the Rajya Sabha then.

It was this triple talaq bill that had created quite a debate between the Narendra Modi government and the Opposition since some years as it was first tabled in the previous term of the government in the Lok Sabha.

The first bill that Narendra Modi government introduced in the Rajya Sabha after it came back to power winning the 2019 Lok Sabha election. It was only last week when the bill cleared the Lok Sabha by being passed last week. With a majority in the Lok Sabha, the Modi government did not have to take much pain in getting the bill approved in the Lower House.

Now, once the President gives his approval, the Muslim community women will at least feel confident and secured from the fear of being divorced by their men for no reason.
