Tuhin Dey fights cerebral palsy, cracks JEE; wants to be an astrophysicist

Kharagpur: Tuhin Dey is a 21-year-old boy with a rare cerebral palsy disease - arthrogryposis multiplex congenital disorder - that limits joint and muscular movement.

However, this rare disease did not deter his dream of studying in one of the premier institute of the country.

This year, Tuhin cracked the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main in the general PWD category securing 438 rank. He got admission in computer science engineering at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur.

Accoring to Tuhin, self-study and consistent hardwork is the key to his success. He gives credit to his parents and teachers for their constant support in achieving his dream.

Tuhin aspires to become an astrophysicist and draws inspiration from theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.

What motivated Tuhin is the willpower of Stephen Hawkings to challenge his own disability and becoming one of the world's most successful scientist.

He has decided to pursue astrophysics after completing his BTech in computer science and aims to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Tuhin's journey wasn't an easy one because he was dependent on others for his daily routines as he couldn't move his hands and legs due to this disease.

Tuhin has so far undergone 20 surgeries and several plates have been inserted into his body to keep the bone straight.

Despite of his disabilities, he has bagged the Best Creative Child Award in 2012 and the Exceptional Achievement Award in 2013 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. He has also received the state award for the best creative child in 2011 in West Bengal.
