Two-year Jail term for cops who refuse to file FIR, suggests a new amendment

GUWAHATI: Police can land up in prison if they refuse to file FIR, according to a new amendment.

FIR is a notification to the police of a cognizable offence. The informant/complainant is provided with an FIR number

"F.I.R. means First Information Report, made to police, about commission of a cognizable offence. IT is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence. In effect, it amounts to putting law in to motion by giving information relating to the commission of a cognizable offence to an officer in charge of a police station and shall be signed by the person," states the Assam Police website.

For filing an FIR, the informant/complainant should visit the police station under whose jurisdiction the crime has taken place.

The informant/complainant needs a valid ID proof to file an FIR.
