Union Cabinet nod for bilateral cooperation in criminal matters, child development

NEW DELHI: The Union cabinet on Wednesday accorded approval to the agreement between India and Brazil on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and also for bilateral cooperation in the field of early childhood.

“Both countries will benefit from the exchange of best practices of the respective countries in the field of early childhood,” it said.

“In the context of transnational crime and its linkages to terrorism, the proposed agreement will provide a broad legal framework for bilateral cooperation with Brazil in investigation and prosecution of crime as well as in tracing, restraint and confiscation of proceeds and instruments of crime as well as the fund meant to finance terrorist acts,” it said.

Meanwhile, Cabinet also approved an MoU for cooperation in the field of oil and natural gas.

Under the MoU, both sides will work towards establishing cooperation in the exploration and production initiatives in Brazil and India, on research and development in the sector, as well as explore collaboration in liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in Brazil, India and third countries.

According to the statement, both the countries will also encourage collaboration in oil energy and environmental issues, including energy policies such as energy efficiency, energy research development, and expansion of the regional energy infrastructure networks.

“The MoU is expected to be signed during the visit of the President of Brazil to India later this month,” it said. (IANS)
