Union Finance Minister Inaugurates 400th Birthday Celebration of Lachit Borphukan

NEW DELHI: The mega celebration to commemorate the 400th birthday of the military leader of the Ahom empire of Assam started in New Delhi today.

Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman was present for the inauguration of the event alongside the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Several other ministers of the Assam Cabinet and other dignitaries were present in New Delhi for this event.

Assam Government has taken several steps towards making more and more people aware of the military general. A cultural rally was taken out by the Assamese people to showcase the stories of the general, especially those pertaining to the defeat of the Mughal army in the legendary battle of Saraighat on the bank of the Brahmaputra.

The event also includes an exhibition displaying the 2000 years old history of the state of Assam. It also aims to highlight the 600-year-long rule of the Ahom dynasty in the state.

Addressing the gathering in the premises of the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the finance minister of India said, "Ahom General Lachit Barphukan had fought and defeated the Mughals in the battle of Saraighat in 1671 is one of the finest examples of courage, valour, leadership and deep patriotism." She also thanked and applauded the efforts of Himanta Biswa Sarma for planning and executing such an event in the nerve centre of the country.

Meanwhile the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma stressed the need for this event and make all Indians aware of the hero. He mentioned that the state is honoured to host such an event in New Delhi and asked all the attendees to spread the necessary knowledge to as many citizens of the country as possible.

The Home Minster will attend the celebrations tomorrow, as November 24 is the 400th Birth anniversary of the leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the closing ceremony of the event.
