UP Man Commits Suicide After Boss Asked Him To ''Send Wife For A Night''

Lucknow: A 45-year-old employee of the Uttar Pradesh power department committed suicide, allegedly after a senior official asked him to ''send his wife for a night'' if he wanted a transfer.

Upset over this, the employee named Gokul Prasad poured diesel over himself outside the junior engineer's office in Lakhimpur and set himself on fire. Soon, after the incident, he was taken to the hospital but died during the treatment on Sunday.

Following the incident, junior engineer Nagendra Kumar and a clerk have been suspended and a police case has been registered.

According to reports, in a video shot, after Prasad had set himself on fire, he narrated what forced him to take this extreme step. In the video, he was seen alleging that the junior engineer and his aide had been harassing him following which he approached the police, however, he received no help from their side.

The reports further quoted his wife as saying that the accused had been torturing Gokul for the past three years.

''He went into depression, and started taking medication, but they did not spare him. He was transferred to Aliganj and was facing difficulty in travelling. So he asked for a transfer closer home. They told him, get your wife to sleep with us and we will get you transferred,'' she was quoted as saying by media reports.

"The junior engineer stood there and watched," she added.

Commenting on the same, senior police officer Sanjiv Suman asserted that the lineman had alleged the junior engineer used to demand money and often made vulgar statements whenever he sought a transfer.

''We have registered a case. At the department level, the junior engineer has been suspended and an inquiry was ordered. The case has been registered under the abetment to suicide charge," he added.
