Weather Updates: Know The Meaning of Red, Orange, Yellow, And Green Alerts

Guwahati: Every year during the monsoon season, one must have heard the words like Orange, Red, Green, and Yellow alerts from the meteorological departments. In India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issues these alerts by using four different colour codes as per the weather condition.

The selection of colors is done in collaboration with several agencies to give warnings. These alerts are issued based on the intensity of inclement weather and the colors keep changing through the intensity.

In this write up we will learn what these alerts are and what colour code is used to alert the masses regarding the weather conditions.

Red Alert:

Whenever a cyclone with high intensity like a wind speed 130 kmph with strong rain hit any part of the country, a red alert is issued by the Meteorological Department for the areas falling within the range of the storm, and the administration is asked to take necessary steps.

In simple words, Red alert means a dangerous situation. As per the Meteorological Department, when the weather is dangerous and there is a risk of heavy damage, then a red alert is issued.

This type of alert is announced only when there is a possibility of 30 mm and it's likely to continue for at least 2 hours. In most cases, people are evacuated from living in low-lying as the risk increases.

Orange Alert:

The Meteorological Department issues Orange alerts in a bid to make aware people of danger. The Orange Alert is issued by updating the Yellow Alert. If this alert has been issued by the Meteorological department then there is a possibility of severe weather due to cyclones which can cause damage to the road and air transport as well as loss of life and property.

That's why people are advised to stay in their homes as there is a strong possibility of dangerous flooding in the affected area. In the notification of this type of alert, a plan has to be prepared to get people out of the affected area.

Yellow Alert:

The Meteorological Department uses Yellow Alert to alert people and make them aware of the danger. In simple words, it means that this alert is a signal of Just Watch. In this type of warning, rain is expected from 7.5 to 15 mm which is likely to continue for the next 1 or 2 hours due to which there is a possibility of flooding.

Green Alert:

Many times a green alert is issued by the Meteorological Department which means that there is no danger at the concerned place.
