West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh says there is no harm in drinking cow urine

KOLKATA: West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has said that there is no harm in drinking cow urine. He also said that he consumes cow urine. Amid coronavirus scare, a cow urine-consumption programme was organised in north Kolkata.

Ghose spoke in favour of cow urine after a civic volunteer filed a complaint that he was told that it was “chanramrit” but was fooled into drinking what was actually cow urine.

“There is no harm in consumption of urine. For ages, people in our country has consumed urine, all of them have been fit and fine. I have no qualm in accepting that I consume cow urine and will again do so. I am not an opportunist.”

His party members however differed with many saying that these are unscientific practices.

"When science has made so much progress, we should shun such unscientific beliefs as it would in no way help us in combating this pandemic. It would rather create more confusion," BJP member from West Bengal Locket Chatterjee said.

A lot of people have suggested ‘gaumutra’ (cow urine) and ‘gobar’ (cow dung) as possible treatment to fight coronavirus infection.

Suman Haripriya, BJP MLA from Assam had suggested the same when the Assam Assembly was discussing illegal smuggling of cows to Bangladesh. “We all know that cow dung is very helpful. Likewise, when cow urine is sprayed, it purifies an area… I believe something similar could be done with ‘gaumutra’ and ‘gobar’ to cure coronavirus (disease),” she said.

“The rishi munis (saints) had performed hawan by using cow dung and the air of about five-kilometre radius area was purified… Our government can also try to do this,” she added.

She also gave an example where such treatment was used to cure cancer at an Ayurvedic hospital in Gujarat.

“Cancer also can cure by using cow urine, cow dung… Coronavirus is an airborne disease and it can also be cured,” said Haripriya.

Chakrapani Maharaj, President of Hindu Mahasabha had also said that cow urine and cow dung can be used to treat coronavirus.

“Consuming cow urine and cow dung will stop the effect of infectious coronavirus. A person who chants Om Namah Shivay and applies cow dung on body, will be saved. A special yagna ritual will soon be performed to kill coronavirus,” said Chakrapani.

Chakrapani also said that he will carry out a special yagna to kill the virus and end its effects on the world.

Cow urine and cow dung have been touted as substances with many benefits by many organizations.

Products made from cow urine and cow dung manufactured at a gaushala in Bithoor in Kanpur were on sale at the current Magh Mela in Prayagraj.

From soaps to incense to toothpaste and eye drops, a lot of products were on sale.

Abhishek Bajpai, manager of the VHP-run cow shelter told reporters that this is the first time that such products were up for sale at Magh Mela but they were very much out in the market during 2013 and 2019 Kumbh Melas.
