Kolkata: On Tuesday, three members of a family were found dead at Khardah, near Barrackpore, which is 30 km from Kolkata.

The house in which the family lived was found to be waterlogged after heavy rains. It has been suspected that the three deceased, which included a 10-year-old boy, had died of electrocution.

The neighbours were prompted to call the authorities after hearing the cries of a 4-year-old child who is the sole survivor of the family and watched his parents and brother die from a nearby bed.

The housing colony in which the victims, Raja Das and his family, lived had been waterlogged for days, long before the weekend rains arrived.

The hospital in which the three deceased were taken to declared them brought dead upon arrival.

Kolkata and other southern districts of West Bengal had been experiencing heavy rainfall since Sunday night. The recent rainfall was declared by the weather office as the third highest in the century after it witnessed almost 160mm of rain.

The railways of Kolkata and other areas were also affected due to floods resulting from rain.

As per reports, the heavy rainfall was caused by the cyclonic circulation from North West Bay of Bengal to Gangetic West Bengal in Kolkata and its adjoining areas.
