Punjab: Youth Beaten to Death For Alleged Sacrilege Attempt, 2nd Lynching In 24 Hours

NEW DELHI: A youth was allegedly beaten to death in Punjab today again within 24 hours after a man was killed by a mob who attempted to commit "sacrilege" inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

In Kapurthala, there was an attempt to sabotage the Nishan Sahib, located in front of the Nizampur police post at around 4 am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the police chief of Punjab tweeted, "I have taken serious note of the unfortunate incidents in Amritsar and Kapurthala. Any attempt to violate the communal harmony in the state will be dealt with a firm hand."

The Sangat, who had come to perform at Gurdwara Sahib, grabbed him and started beating him. The police rescued the man and locked him in a room but angry villagers beat him to death.

His body was later placed outside the main gate of the SGPC headquarters.

Meanwhile, Saturday's incident at the Golden Temple drew sharp reactions from political leaders, with Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi ordering a probe into it.

The incident took place when the man jumped golden grills inside the sanctum sanctorum, picked a sword and reached near the place where a Sikh priest was reciting the holy Guru Granth Sahib.
