Guwahati: A team from the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD) at Fatasil Ambari Police Station arrested two individuals after they were caught red-handed attempting to steal iron rods from the construction site of the Birubari Flyover.

The suspects were identified as Biki Das (22) and Shyam Sundar Barman (27). Police seized an autorickshaw and about 40 kilograms of stolen iron rods from their possession.

The arrested individuals are currently in custody, and further investigation is underway. The police have stated that they will take strict action against the perpetrators.

On Monday night, a thief's escape attempt led to his injury when police had to open fire in self-defense in Garbhanga, Guwahati. Jaydeb Mazumdar, a resident of Birubari, was in police custody for multiple thefts, including mobile phone thefts and chain snatching.

While being taken to recreate a crime scene, Mazumdar pretended to feel unwell, creating a distraction that allowed him to grab a police officer’s pistol. In response to the threat, the police quickly acted and shot him in the leg to prevent his escape.

Mazumdar was initially treated at a local hospital and later transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. Police confirmed that the shooting was a result of the thief’s attempted escape and the immediate danger posed by his actions. Mazumdar has a long history of criminal activities, with several cases of burglary and theft registered against him.
