1.39 Lakh Affected As Fresh Wave Of Floods Hit Assam

According to a latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, and Majuli districts have been hit by a fresh wave of floods affecting 12 revenue circles with 337 villages.

Approximately six districts Assam have been hit by floods due to rising water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries downstream on Saturday. Sources said because of constant rain Arunachal Pradesh the water level of the Brahmaputra raised and affecting more than one lakh people in the state.

ASDMA report further said that till now no death was reported during the fresh floods. Although this year flood claimed 50 lives which included 42 deaths in floods and eight in landslides.

In the meantime, the Lakhimpur District Administration also issued a high alert after North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) released water from the Ranganadi dam project at Yazali in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday, 13 September.

ASDMA report moreover informed that over 22,000 people have been flood-hit from 118 villages in Dhemaji district alone. The key areas to be affected by the floods according to the report are Jonai, Gogamukh, and Dhemaji.

The floods have deluged 11,243 hectares of agricultural affecting 12,428 people as the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in Jorhat and Tezpur in Sonitpur district, the report mentioned.

Out of the 1,38,985 people affected in the state, Dhemaji was the badly-hit state with at least 78,098 people reeling under floods, along with 17,593 in Biswanath, 29,546 in Majuli, 4,586 in Lakhimpur, 8,322 in Dibrugarh, and 840 in Barpeta districts.

There are Nine relief camps have been set up in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji, the report said, saying that 585 persons were taking shelter there and till yesterday 126 persons were evacuated in Lakhimpur.
