100 new patients from M’laya visit CMC daily: Chandy

SHILLONG, Jan 9: A delegation of doctors from Christian Medial College (CMC), Vellore has informed that more than 100 new patients from Meghalaya visit the hospital for medical treatment daily.

Speaking to reporters, the Director of CMC Vellore Dr. Sunil Chandy said the hospital is most visited by people from the North Eastern Region and especially from the state of Meghalaya.

“The hardship of the patients to travel 2500 km by air and train to avail treatment from the hospital is all because they have faith in the health care of the hospital and also due to the low cost rate of treatment,” Dr. Sunil said adding that there 100 new patience from Meghalaya visiting the hospital for various medical treatment.

Asked on the medical treatment most frequently visited by the people of Meghalaya to the hospital, Dr. Thomas Samuel Ram, Council Secretary CEM Vellore said, “Most of the patients from Meghalaya visit the hospital to get treatment for Mouth Cancer and when we observed from the radiation department the hospital receive around 2000 new patients and approximately 15-20 patients from the region.”

“Many of these patients visit the hospital to get treatment for ‘oral cancer’ as we know that several people from the region are consuming beetle nuts (Kwai) which could ultimately lead to food pipe cancer, stomach cancer etc.,” he said.

He cited that the increasing number of cancer patients is due to the lifestyle of people as many are indulge in smoking, chewing beetle nut, pan etc.
