11th Raising Day of 171 Bn CRPF celebrated

DIBRUGARH, August 13: The 11th Raising Day of 171 Bn CRPF was celebrated at Reserve Police Line recently in a befitting manner. The day’s programme was started with the paying of homage to all the martyrs of the force by officers and jawans of the battalion.

Commandant of 171 Battalion CRPF, Jagadish Prasad Pangal took salute at unit quarter Guard and informed the jawans about the brief history of the battalion.

171 Battalion was raised on August 9 at Durgapur in West Bengal and after initial training the Battalion was deployed at Midpur, the worst Maoist affected area. The Battalion sacrificed one of its valiant member, Binod Rai, during an encounter with the xal militants at Bankura  in 2006. Two of its jawans- Dhyan Singh and Kol Roy also sustained bullet injuries during exchange of fire with the xal militants. Three militants were also gunned down by the CRPF jawans on the spot and a huge number of arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants. Rai was later awarded with President Police Medal posthumously for his courage and sacrifice. The injured CRPF jawans were also honored with Gallantry police medals.

Since its deployment in Dibrugarh, the Battalion has been performing the assigned duty with  dedication and efficiency .The raising day was marked with sports activities like volleyball match and tug-of-war competition. The cultural function, organized  in the evening at Police Community Hall, was formally  iugurated by DIGP (Ops), Bhupendra Kumar  and was attended by the Superintendent of Police, Ra Bhuyan ,Deputy Commissioner (SB), AK Mishra and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Robin Gohain as chief guests.
