13 rescued from stranded monorail in Mumbai

Mumbai, March 15: Eleven commuters and two crew members were rescued by cranes after the country’s first elevated monorail got stuck after a power failure here on Sunday. The incident occurred between Bhakti Park and Wadala stations when the monorail stopped high in the air. After it failed to start, the authorities called the fire brigade for help. After an hour-long operation and deploying its special cranes, the fire brigade maged to save all those stuck in the monorail safely. The monorail services on the route were resumed after the power supply was restored. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadvis has ordered an inquiry in the matter. RTI activist Anil Gagalia has has written to Fadvis and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority on how the monorail, constructed at such a huge cost, does not even have a power backup arrangement to pull it till the next station to eble commuters deboard safely.  (IANS)
