15 vehicles destroyed, over 100 arrested during Assam bandh

JORHAT, July 3: At least 15 vehicles were destroyed and over 100 people arrested in Jorhat district on Monday during the 12-hour bandh called by the six ethnic tribes. Mohan Saikia, general secretary of Chutia Yuva Sanmillani, said that the issue of granting ST status to the six ethnic communities of Assam had become a burning issue. The former Congress government cheated the six communities and people of Assam gave the party a befitting reply in the last Assembly election. “If the present BJP-led Assam Government does the same thing, the BJP too will get the same reply in the Panchayat election and Lok Sabha election as our demands are genuine,” he said.
