1,500 litres of illicit liquor seized, three arrested

MANGALDAI, June 15: The task force under Darrang Excise department, in their continuing drive against illicit spurious liquor, contraband drugs and ganja, bbed three notorious illicit spurious country liquor dealers from different locations of Mangaldai, including No. 1 police point, rice market and Kerimeri, and seized around 1,500 liters of liquor from their possession on Tuesday.

The persons held in this connection have been identified as Maniram Das (56) of Begamukh, Sukdeb Das (53) of ward no 5 and Katiram Boro (55) of Gelaidingi under Mangaldai Police Station. On the other hand, a joint team of Excise officials and police also seized several bottles of beer illegally kept for sale in a grocery at Sipajhar. Action has already been initiated as per the provision of the Excise rules, said a source from Darrang Excise.

Meanwhile, in response to repeated public complaints about the frequent movement and assembly of a group of anti-social elements and users of contraband banned drugs, ganja and other intoxicating substances, a team of Excise on Monday evening reportedly raided the area close to Mangaldai Stadium but all such intoxicated youths maged to escape under the cover of darkness. According to Excise source, the department has already asked the custodian of the stadium- the Mangaldai Sports Association - for arranging sufficient light in the stadium campus and to seal the boundary from uuthorized intruders during evening hours to check these anti-social activities. However, the sports body is yet to respond to the appeal, the source reiterated.
