162nd birth anniversary of Jagatpurush Sree raya Guru observed

SHILLONG, Sept 24: The 13th annual celebration of Sree raya Guru Cultural Centre (SNGCC), Shillong and 162nd birth anniversary of Jagatpurush Sree raya Guru was observed today at Assam Kristi Kendra, Shillong.

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker A T Mondal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the presence of Dr. Jemino Mawthoh, MLA, H W T Syiem, former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, G K Sasidharan, former Vice Chancellor, University of Calicut, M K Mohan, President, SNGCC, Shillong among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Mondal lauded the Shillong Centre for serving the society based on the philosophy of Sree raya Guru, a philosopher and social reformer who stressed on the need for the social uplift of the downtrodden with his threefold teaching “Attain freedom through education”, “Attain economic independence through entrepreneurship” and “Strengthen through organization”.


“Life and teachings of raya Guru can be a role model for everyone because he stood for universal brotherhood and empowerment for all without any discrimition,” added Mondal.

On the occasion the Chief Guest and other dignitaries also gave away the SNGCC annual awards in the field of social service to Amily Changmai, Gram Sevika, Kasturba Gram Seva Centre, Laitkroh, Literary award to Sweetymon Rynjah, former Deputy Registrar NEHU, Entrepreneurship award to Badapbiang Dewkhaid, Bamboo architect and founder, Shillong Bamboo and Lifetime Achievement Award to Prof. G. K. Sasidharan, former Vice Chancellor of Calicut, Kerala.

Other highlights of programme included felicitation of  silk weaver from Korhadem, Mawhati, Ri Bhoi District, release of SNGCC Shillong Biannual Publication ‘Oneness’ and Daivadasakam multilingual Audio CD by the Chief Guest followed by the cultural programme.
