16th Fish Farmers' Day observed

Imphal, July 10: The Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, observed 16th Fish Farmers’ Day on Sunday at the Directorate’s complex.  The function was held to promote and develop the local fish farmers who worked ceaselessly to provide the requirements of fish in state. The Department lauded the local fish farmers by organizing Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition last year and the prizes were distributed today in the function. The monetary award and citation amounting Rs. 1,00,00, 70,000 and 50,000 were awarded to three farmers mely Ningthoujam Kumar Singh of Thanga Chingmei, Bishnupur District , Ningthoujam Basanta  of Kribul, Bishnupur District and Soibam Surchandra Singh of Hiyangthang, Imphal West as 1st , 2nd and 3rd of the competition.

The Director of Fisheries David K. Shimray appealed to the farmers to have a positive thinking in producing of fishes and also for producing more than 32,000 metric tons of fish even though they don’t meet  the requirements for local consumption  and to meet requirements, the Director highlighted some schemes for the welfare of local fish farmer for the year 2012-17. The Chief Guest of the function Md. Abdul sir, Minister (agri. and fisheries) said that the schemes are central and state sponsored. “The Farmers’ Day is organized for the welfare of the farmers, and if any farmers have any problems , it should be taken to the notice of the Minister and it should be resolved between  Government and the farmers,” he said. The function was attended also attended by Th. Gopen Meetei, IAS (Secy. Fisheries) and H. Biramani Singh and other dignitaries from various fields. This was stated in a press release.
