1st Convocation of USTM held at Khapara

SHILLONG, April 22: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) witnessed a landmark celebration of its first Convocation on its main campus today wherein the Governor of Meghalaya V Shanmuganthan graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Minister for Urban Affairs Ampareen Lyngdoh was the guest of honour, a press release stated.

A total number of 536 students were conferred their Bachelor’s and Master’s degree and certificates on the occasion, including gold medalists in Post Graduate programme, who secured highest percentage of marks in their programme of study. The University also awarded honorary degrees to JM Lyngdoh, former Chief Election Officer of India, MT Raman Barbhuiya and Arun Sharma for their outstanding contribution to the society in various fields.

The convocation was also witnessed by the Vice Chancellors from various universities of India like University of Mumbai, Delhi University, Gauhati University, Tezpur University, NEHU, Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica, Christopher S. Morales, besides the students with their parents and guardians.

The Governor in his convocation address said that convocation day is a great and memorable day for the institution. It is a day to mark the achievement of the institution and also a day where the institution is reminded of the purpose of its existence and the philosophy it holds with high commitment in the field of education. He congratulated the faculty of the University for their efforts in leading the students to success and also to parents and guardians for their encouragement and support their children for studies.

“This is the marking moment in your life, one step outside you will face the real world” he told the graduates and encouraged them to prepare themselves to face the challenges in their life. He also pointed out the three important things for graduates - their career, research and to be thoughtful of others.

Later, medals and certificates were distributed to the students.
