200-year-old banyan tree faces erosion threat

PATHSALA, May 25: The famous banyan tree located in Jalikata village of Bajali subdivision near Pathsala is believed to be one of the oldest banyan trees in India, and is nearly 200 years old! The banyan tree engulfs a land area of nearly four bighas and reportedly it is also the largest living tree in the Asian subcontinent on the banks of Kaldia River at Jalikata. ture-loving people often visit the place and during winter it is preferred spot for picnickers. But the tree is now under serious threat due to heavy erosion by the Kaldia River. The local people have urged the authorities concerned to take necessary  action and steps to develop the place as a tourist spot.
