21st Wangala celebration begins today

Donkamokam, November 4: Preparations are almost complete to celebrate the 21st edition of Wangala, the most significant festival of the Garos of Karbi Anglong, from November 5 with a three-day programme at Bithung No 15 Rajendra Memorial LP School playground in West Karbi Anglong.

During the Wangala, the Garos remember the god Misi Saljong, also called ‘Patigipa Rarongipa’ and pray for a good harvest. The harvesting festival begins with the advent of autumn season, that is, in the month of October or November.

During the three-days programme, Garo youths will take part in traditiol competition such as matgrik chroka (warrior dance),  dama doka (beating of drums in different forms), adil sika (blowing of buffalo horn), chigring doka (bamboo guitar), monkey climbing, art competition, Rere, Ajea, Garo weightlifting, Ohomai Ringa, Dorua, lullaby songs and harvesting dance will be held.

This year 32 troupes from every nook and corner of Karbi Anglong are expected along with delegates of over 300 and at the same MDCs from Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Garo tiol Council, GNC leaders from Goalpara and Kamrup, and BTAD.

On November 5, KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang will iugurate the 21st Wangala and he will be accompanied by MLAs Dr Numol Momin and Pijush Hazarika.
