JOYSAGAR, May 24: Altogether 26 indigenous organizations, led by All Assam Students’ Union, Sivasagar district committee and All Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, came together under one banner to present a unified public voice in Sivasagar Sadar on Wednesday. The activists of the organizations gathered in Boarding Field and took out a protest rally throughout the main thoroughfares of the town. They sharply opposed the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The leaders of the organizations said that through this proposed bill, the demographic and socio-cultural balance of Assam as well as the Assamese society would be changed and there would be a threat to the identity of the indigenous people. Later, they submitted a memorandum to PJ Sarmah, the executive magistrate of the district, addressing to the chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister.
