30th Road Safety Week celebration begins in Darrang

MANGALDAI: Along the rest of the State, Darrang district too joined the 30th Road Safety Week celebration that begun on Monday with the theme ‘Road Safety- Life Safety’. The inaugural day witnessed an awareness rally with the participation of light motor vehicles and motor bikes displaying various awareness banners and placards from the District Transport Office premises. It was flagged off by Mangaldai Legislator Gurujyoti Das.

A galaxy of officials, including legislator Guru Jyoti Das, District Development Commissioner Sweety Gogoi Kalita, Additional Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty, while taking part in the inaugural function, spoke on the need for coordinated efforts at all levels starting from school to reduce the casualties of road accidents, which had been recorded as over 400 on an average per day in the country. The speakers also discussed about various measures to tackle this problem which had turned out to be a menace for the modern civilized world.

They also underlined the necessity of mass public awareness regarding government beneficiary schemes, including the ‘Solacium’ scheme, and declaration of the nearby areas of educational institutions and hospitals along the national highways as the ‘No Horn Zone’. Earlier, District Transport Officer of Darrang Dipanjali Bora explained its objectives.

Enforcement Inspector Sahabuddin Tapadar and Motor Vehicle Inspector Padma Lochan Hazarika, while talking to The Sentinel, informed that the week-long celebration would feature several other programmes.
