319 trucks seized, 544 arrested in 3 years for defying NGT ban

JOWAI, Sept 5: After the tiol Green Tribul (NGT) banning the unscientific rat hole mining and transportation of coal in Meghalaya, East Jaintia Hills District police have so far seized around 319 coal laden trucks and arrested as many as 544 persons who were allegedly involved in coal mining activities defying green tribul order. These persons were involved in various activities including illegal extraction and transportation of coal from the district to Assam.  “Notwithstanding the seizure and arrest, there are some coal laden trucks who maged to escaped from the long hands of the law,” Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, S Thamar told The Sentinel. “We have tried our best to capture and arrest the coal laden trucks and the persons involved in transporting of Coal, but still some coal laden truck had escaped from the hand of the police,” Thamar stated.
