33 Passengers Died After Bus Plunges Into 500-Feet Deep Gorge in Raigad District, Maharashtra

Maharashtra, July 28: 33 staffs died on spot after a bus terrificly skidded off the road into a 500 feet-deep gorge in Raigad District of Maharashtra around 12:30 pm of today's' afternoon. Report States that the bus was carrying 34 staffs of Dapoli Agricultural University Konkan district. It has been reported that the staffs were on its way to a picnic spot towards Mahabaleshwar which is a popular tourist destination.

The teams of NDRF immediate rushed to the accident site from Pune. The incident took place near the popular tourist destinations of Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani.The accident came to notice after one of the injured passenger alerted the authorities after he has been pulled out alive from the mangled remains of the bus.

Police officer Anil Paraskar said the passengers were on their way to Mahabaleshwar, a hill station in Satara district, for a picnic, when the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a turn and fell into the gorge.Rescue efforts were severely hampered by heavy rains lashing the Western Ghats, besides poor connectivity in the remote hills in the area.

A dozen ambulances and 15 doctors have also reached the spot, an official said. PM tweeted, "Pained by the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Maharashtra's Raigad district. My condolences to those who lost their loved ones."

Rahul Gandhi too tweeted his condolences- "I'm sorry to hear about the terrible bus accident in Raigad, Maharashtra in which a large number of people have been killed and many others injured. I appeal to Congress party workers in the area to provide all possible assistance to the injured and families of those who have died."
