Bangkok, Jan 12: Thirty-six people have died and one was reported missing in floods caused by torrential rains in southern Thailand, officials said on Thursday. According to the latest report by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the floods have affected some 1.2 million people in more than 5,200 localities across some dozen provinces, and damaged 17 government buildings, 590 roads and 106 bridges, Efe news reported. Twenty-five schools and 170 places of worship have also been affected. khon Si Thammarat province has been the worst-hit, with nine deaths, while six people have died in Surat Thani. The ruling military junta dispatched a contingent of 4,000 soldiers for relief efforts, especially in the villages that have been isolated due to damaged roads and bridges. The late rains — monsoon season usually ends in the region by November or December — have been continuing uninterrupted for over a week, the department added. (IANS)
