60 coal-laden trucks seized

From a Reporter
SHILLONG, Jan 19: The Ri Bhoi police detained around 60 coal-laden overloaded trucks at 13th Mile in Byrnihat on Friday.
Ri Bhoi SP Ramesh Singh said  that the trucks were trying to evade weighbridge by turning towards Assam from the wrong side of NH 6, which  is a serious offence endangering the lives of police personnel on duty as well as other commuters.
Followingthe detection, the magistrate also rushed to the place of offence to took stock of the situation.
After the trucks were seized an FIR was registered under relevant sections. The motive of the trucks evading weighbridge was to avoid unloading of overloaded coal and to prevent issuance of challans by DMR.
With the Supreme Court allowing extension of transportation of coal for four months, there has been a surge in number of trucks transporting coal. Ribhoi being the exit point for coal bound for Assam, enforcing coal transportation regulations as per NGT guidelines is a Herculean task at a time when most of the police force will have to be deployed on election duty.
