617 bottles of cough syrup seized

MANGALDAI, October 7: A team of Dhula Police Station in Darrang district, led by the Officer-in -Charge Sub Inspector Ranjit Hazarika, on Wednesday seized 617 bottles of Codeine Phosphate and Chlorpheniramine Maleate syrup-a cough syrup which has widely been used as psychotropic drugs by a section of youths to get intoxicated.

Acting on a tip-off, the police team recovered 17 bottles of the cough syrup from a youth which led to the recovery of the 617 bottles in six cartons from a ‘Restricted Premise’ licensed pharmacy of Tangni Chariali near Dhula Police Station. In this connection the police have arrested five persons mely Gautam Deka alias ga (24) of Mangaldai Police Reserve, Nur Alam (18) and Sadek Ali (32) of Paniakhat, Shekh Asadullah (32), proprietor of Shekh Medical Hall and Shekh Drug Distributors, Niz Shyamabari and Ansari Alam (30) of village Jogipara all under Dhula Police Station.

As per the provisions of the Drugs (and Cosmetics) Act, 1940, no RP license holder pharmacy can sell such types of medicines. But the proprietor of the pharmacy allegedly violated all rules and had been selling these drugs to the drug addicts. Drug Inspector Pritish Das, on receipt of the information, rushed to spot and seized some antibiotic medicines along with saline from the pharmacy.

Talking to The Sentinel Drug Inspector Das said that both the RP Pharmacy and the drug distributor would be closed down and the license would be cancelled. On the other hand, the Dhula Police has registered a case Vide No. 494/15 under section 22 of rcotics and Psychotropic Substance Act and produced all the five arrested accused persons before the judicial court here this afternoon for their remand to judicial custody.
