67th VDP foundation day observed

DIGBOI, Jan 30: The 67th foundation day of Assam Village Defense Party (VDP) was organized here at Digboi, Pengaree and Bordumsa in Tinsukia district with various activities.

The significant day is commemorated as the 115th birth anniversary and 67th death anniversary of  Hari rayan Baruah who probably was the first in the country to have founded  the Village Defense Party organization at Birisayek near Titabor on January 29, 1948. Since then, this particular day has been observed as the foundation day of the organization across the State.

In an open session organized in Digboi, Pengaree and Bordumsa, including Kherajan in Digboi, the volunteers, invited guest and other social workers offered floral tribute and threw ample light on the significant contribution of Baruah  who was born on December 16, 1901 in undivided Sibsagar district (now in Golaghat) and elected thrice as  MLA to the Assam Assembly and worked for the welfare of VDP till his death in Assam.

Inspector Chandan Milli of Digboi Police Station, Gautom Dhanowar, budding Congress leader of Digboi , Chandraprava Gogoi,  deputy adviser of VDP Margherita subdivision,   Ashok Sharma, the ZPC Tinsukia, Geetaji Sonowal, AP president Margherita and Alpa Rajak, the president of Golai GP, spoke about the objectives and social significance and role and contribution and sacrifice of VDP volunteers  in Assam.

Meanwhile, addressing the gathering in the open session presided over by Ajit Bora, president  of Digboi Tha Committee, Ashok Sharma underlined the days and nights toiled by the volunteers and urged the Assam Police and Chief Minister to design a handsome package for the VDP cadres who assist in crime control, dispense quick justice and keep vigilance to ensure peace, in association with the local police administration.
