69th annual conference of All Assam VDP held

Silchar, Feb 1: A number of representatives of Village Defence Parties (VDPs) from the district of Cachar attended the recently concluded 2 day state level 69th annual conference of All Assam Village Defence Party held at Duliajan in Dibrugarh district. Chandra rayan Singh, secretary VDP, Cachar, who attended the conference briefed The Sentinel about the proceedings. Sarbanda Sonowal, Chief Minister, addressed the function as chief guest who laid emphasis on the essentiality to make VDPs advanced, skilled and technologically sound. This will eble the VDPs to face all sorts of challenges. He also assured that there would be an increase in the remuneration of the VDPs to Rs.2500 from Rs.1000 per month. In addition to this, Sarbanda Sonowal also declared that out of the 6000 unregistered VDPs, the government would soon register 3000.

Late Hari rayan Baruah was the founder of the VDP in the year 1949. Since then, VDPs have been tirelessly working and serving the country. The programme began with hoisting of the VDP flag by Terash Goala, MLA Duliajan. Best performing VDPs and organizers were awarded by the CM. Katigorah PS’s VDP’s COVDO Sajal Dutta and Kamal Uddin of Tintikri Village was among the awardees. The team from Cachar was sent under the direction and supervision of Rakesh Roushan, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Cachar, led by Ashish Halder, Cachar VDP’s deputy advisor.

 Sajal Dutta has been awarded for his outstanding service for the third consecutive year. Cachar PS COVDOs, Pijush Kanti Palit, Y Chandra Babu Singh, Hitesh Chakraborty, Matabur Haque Laskar, Prab Kumar Dey and Rebul Hussain. DGP Mukesh Shahay and Dibrugarh MP Rameshwar Teli were also present at the function.
