7 arrested for fake World Bank cheque at Panbazar

GUWAHATI, July 24: A team of officers of the Crime Branch accompanied by Panbazar police arrested one person identified as Dipjyoti Sarma (25) from the State Bank of India, Panbazar branch premise on Tuesday allegedly for producing forged cheques amounting to Rs 1 crore.

According to police source, Dipjyoti visited the SBI, Panabazar branch on Tuesday and produced two cheques amounting to Rs 50 lakh each in the name of his father Pabitra Sarma. Notably, the cheques were said to be issued from the World Bank division of PWD. After a thorough scrutiny of the cheques, Assistant General Manager of the branch Ajanta Hazarika, on sniffing an anomaly informed the police immediately. Responding to the information, the team of officers rushed to the spot and apprehended Dipjyoti on the spot.

Later, following his confession, 6 others allegedly involved with the forgery were arrested from the vicinity of Cotton Collegiate School, Panbazar. They were Dr Ambarish Gorait from Namrup, Ashiman Handique from Dibrugarh, Chandan Deka from Hengerabari, Joon Das from Dibrugarh, Wilson Barik from Tinsukia and Chirantan Das of Hengerabari. In this regard, a case (no 442 /2018) has been registered and further investigation is on.
