Assam Athletic Association and Assam Olympic Association announce Cash Award

GUWAHATI, July 13: Assam Athletic Association and Assam Olympic Association today announced cash award of Rs 2 lakh each for Hima. Announcing the news Rokybul Hussain, the president of the Assam Athletic Association, said, “Hima made us proud. We are very happy with her gold medal-winning performance and hope that this achievement will inspire many state athletes to bring laurels from the national and international meets. Later Rockybul, who also holds the post of Secretary in the Assam Olympic Association, announced the cash award from the organization separately.”

Two legendary figures of Assam Athlete Bhogeswar Baruah and Tayabun Nesca today lauded Hima Das’s performance in the World U20 Athletic Championship where she won the gold medal in the women 400m. They also advised the government to provide necessary steps to the sprinter who showed tremendous potential in the game.

Hima, before her departure to Finland, called Barua over the telephone to receive her blessing. Recalling the moment Baruah, the first Assamese athlete to win a gold medal in the Asian Games, today told the media, “She recently gave me a call and sought blessing from me for the World Championship. I gave her few tips during that conversation but entire credit should go to Hima for winning the medals. It is undoubtedly a historic moment for us.”

On the other hand, congratulating Hima Tayabun Nesca said, “Hima has more to deliver in international level. It is the time that the government should step forward and provides necessary help to her. Athletics Federation of India is doing well to provide good coaches and support staffs to the athlete. However we should arrange a coach who can only focus on Hima and in that case, the help of Government is very necessary.”

Her coach Nipon Das, who found the talent in Hima and encouraged her to came in this event, feels, it is just the beginning. “Hima is a highly talented athlete and doesn’t fear to work hard. You can expect more and more such performances from her in the coming days.”

T Ao Birth Centenary Celebration committee too congratulated Hima for her record winning performance. At the same time, they also appealed to the government to release the necessary fund so that the athlete can prepare herself for the best possible way for the forthcoming Asian Games.
