FROM A CORRESPONDENT

KALAIGAON, February 10: Kalaigaon Anchalik Committee, Ranipukhuri Anchalik Committee, Mudwibari and Bhakatpara Anchalik committee of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) staged a three-hour dhar in front of Kalaigaon Police Station on Wednesday in protest against teer gambling and sale of country-made liquor.

Mainul Islam, general secretary of Udalguri AAMSU, alleged that anti-social activities like teer gambling was destroying the youths of Kalaigaon. Gambling had polluted the social environment of the area.  Kalaigaon AAMSU along with other several organizations had protested against this earlier but teer gambling had continued in Kalaigaon area despite these protests.

The protesters alleged that people running the gambling business were hands-in-glove with the local police. So the Kalaigaon AAMSU staged a dhar from 10 am to 1 pm on Wednesday to demand concrete action to stop gambling in the area.

More than 200 protesters took part in this programme. Abdul Khalek and Mafijur Rahman were present in this dhar. They submitted a memorandum to the Circle Officer of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle.
