AASAA demands CBI probe into Pengeri incident

From our Staff Correspondent

Dibrugarh, April 21: The All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) in a memorandum submitted to the Governor of Assam through the Deputy Commissioner, alleged that  the police had fired and killed 11 innocent Adivasi protestors who assembled at Pengeri  PS in Tinsukia district  to lodge their protest against killing of two persons, instead of canning and using of rubber bullets.

The AASAA leadership has demanded a CBI enquiry into the incident and immediate suspension of the officer in-charge of the Pengeri police station who had ordered police firing.

The students’ body also staged sit-in strike for a brief period on Wednesday in front of the DC office here. They also, through memorandum, demanded compensation to next of the kin of all those killed in police firing and free and specialized treatment to all injured.

They alleged that the police intentiolly fired at the high tension overhead electric power supply line so that they could stage-mage their firing act into an incident of electrocution.  Police later claimed that the death of 11 tea workers was caused due to electrocution. But fact remains that, AASAA alleged, most of the deceased were killed due to police firing.
