All Assam Students Union (AASU) activists expelled

JOYSAGAR, July 15: In a shocking development, as many as five All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) activists of Amguri Regional Committee were expelled by the organization’s central committee on Saturday for alleged involvement in a robbery which took place on NH-61 under Amguri PS of Sivasagar district on Tuesday.

The AASU central committee had formed an enquiry panel to probe the allegation that in the robbery, Amguri AASU unit activists were involved with other robbers. The robbers allegedly looted many trucks going to Nagaland carrying essential commodities and the AASU activists, instead of helping the truck drivers, had allegedly beaten them and also collected lakhs of rupees from the drivers.

The incident invited sharp criticism and following this, the AASU central committee conducted a probe into the incident and finally expelled five Amguri AASU activists from the organization, sources informed. The expelled AASU activists are Amlan Mahanta, Jyoti Kalita, Rajdeep Kakoti, Prasen Bhuyan and Samiran Borphukan.

Besides, few months ago another robbery had taken place on NH-37 of Sivasagar town where some Sivasagar AASU activists were directly involved. Sivasagar AASU activists have allegedly started forceful collection of money from various businessmen and are also getting involved in robbery at night on the NH-37 and NH-61 of Sivasagar.

Sivasagar Police are also looking into the matter and after thorough investigation, necessary police action will be taken.
