AASU organises Mukoli Bihu at Dergaon

DERGAON, April 17: The Dergaon Anchalik committee of the All Assam Students’ Union organised the annual open-air (Mukoli Bihu) celebrations at ren Sarmah Memorial field here on Thursday. Noted author and researcher on Bihu, Dr Anil Saikia iugurated the Bihu programme.  Speaking on the occasion Dr Saikia said that the Bihu is a continuous process of assimilation of folklore.

“Bihu has witnessed seven stages so far. Origiting from the beneath of tree, Bihu is now in front of business establishments. The first stage was at the yard of Assamese people and then it got its first refinement during the period of Sankardev. After that it again changed during the tenure of king Rudra Singha. After the treaty of Yandaboo in 1826 it got another shape. In 1972 Bihu came to the stage. During 1980’s it again got some noticeable changes. And filly now it has completely changed,” Saikia said.

He said that for the ‘so called  unpleasant change’ of Bihu the elders as well as the society is responsible.

Dr Saikia also released a souvenir titled Bargach published on the occasion which is edited by Prasanta Madhab Bora.

The iugural function , which was moderated by Deep Barthakur and Prasanta Madhab Bora , was also attended by several AASU leaders—Manuwar Hussain, Raju Phukan, Dadul Bora, Paban Saikia, Imdadul Hussain, Abhibaratan Goswami and  Jitumanui Bora.

Delivering his speech the newly elected assistant general secretary of AASU Manuwar Hussain urged the gathering to be more conscious about the NRC update process.

On the other hand, newly elected organising secretary of AASU Raju Phukan urged the gathering to be more alert for the development and conservation of mother tongue.

Several Bihu dance troupes from different places enthralled the audiences. Earlier the Bihu flag was hoisted by Dr. Choudhury th Saikia while the AASU flag was hoisted by the Secretary of the Celebration committee Deep Barthakur.

The smriti tarpan was offered  by secretary of Dergaon AASU Abdulla Siddikee.
