All Assam Students' Union thanks Nitish for opposing Citizenship Amendment Bill

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 10: The All Assam Students’ Union on Tuesday dashed off a special letter of thanks to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressing its gratitude to the veteran political leader for opposing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The letter signed by the AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi and president Dipanka Kumar Nath has lauded the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal-United, an alliance partner of the NDA, for opposing the Bill. It said the JDU stand is a bold stand taken by a national political party towards safeguarding identity of the indigenous people of Assam.

The decision to oppose the Bill was taken at the national executive of the JD(U) held at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi on Sunday. JDU general secretary KC Tyagi said that the Bill is a threat to the secular character of the country and the party is opposed to it. He further said that the Bill will also be a threat to the unity and integrity of the north-eastern states, particularly Assam.

On May 17, a delegation of the AASU met Nitish Kumar and urged him to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
